About GPW

Grosse Pointe Woods is a small suburb of Detroit, home to about 16,000 residents. The three square mile city was originally settled by the French in the late 17th century, who planted long, narrow "ribbon farms" stretching inland from lake St. Clair. Up through the late 19th century, much of the area was dominated by marshes.

Around Town

The small town feel of Grosse Pointe Woods and its proximity to the larger metro-Detroit area have resulted in a dearth of cultural attractions beyond local parks. Luckily, the surrounding areas offer many attractions, such as the Village in neighboring Grosse Pointe Farms, a shopping district and our main parade route.

The Village

The Village

The stately homes along Lake St. Clair in Grosse Pointe Shores are a spectacle in and of themselves, but especially towards the end of the year. This area's architecture is not only aesthetically overwhelming, but also historically interesting. Grosse Pointe's position along Lake St. Clair and proximity to the Canadian border made it a hotspot for rumrunners during prohibition. Much of the wealth in the area can be traced back to such illicit origins, resulting in many of the mansions' secret passages and hidden rooms.
