Gainesville is home to the University of Florida.Gainesville is the largest city in North Central Florida. It is roughly 60 miles from either coast putting it almost directly in the middle of the state, hence its nickname "The Swamp".
One iconic part of Gainesville is the Solar Walk. The Solar Walk is an art installation of the solar system from the Sun to Pluto which is 3.6 billion miles scaled to 0.9 miles. Along this nearly mile long installation you will see monuments depicting each of the planets (designed by Elizabeth Indianos) and some stars and each planet also has a plaque (designed by Tim Malles).
Gainesville is also home to the The Lubee Bat Conservancy which is an internatioal non-profit organization. The main mission of Lubee is to "save bats and their habitats through reseach, conservation, and education, with a focus on children and community engagement." It was founded by Luis F. Bacardi in 1989 (the conservancy does not receive finanical support from Bacardi).
Even though Gainesville is very proud of UF, and their sports, there are plenty of other aspects about this town. There is lots of great food, art, and tons of culture to see in Gainesville. If you are looking to visit a truly unique college town then you should visit The Swamp!
